Descendants of Isaac (Ike) Gore Generation No. 1 1. ISAAC (IKE)6 GORE (JOHN5, HENRY4, JOHN3, JOSEPH2, JOHN1) was born 27 September 1782 in Shenandoah County, Virginia1, and died Abt. 1847 in Overton County, Tennessee. He married NETTIE SIMCOE in Virginia2. She was born Abt. 1780, and died Abt. 1850 in Sumner County, Tennessee3. Notes for ISAAC (IKE) GORE: The act (1801, establishing Jackson County) also attached Jackson County to the Judicial District of Mero. The house of John Bowen on Roaring River was made the temporary seat of Justice where the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions was held. This place for many years was known as the Jackson County Court House. It was located near the falls of Roaring River, where Crawford's Mill now stands. The Court House was on or near the tract of land where William Gore lived for many years known as the "Uncle Billy Gore" place. The location of the first county seat of Jackson County is now in Overton County. Charlie Claiborne Gore was a Trustee for the Pleasant Forest Academy, the third school established by the Act of 1908. Enlisted in Confederate Army in October 1861 at Camp Zollicoffer near Livingston, TN. Was in Co. B, 25th Regiment and was engaged in battles at Corinth, MS; Perryville, KY; Murfreesboro, Tennessee and then was transferred to the Cavalry. Isaac had a pension (Pension #12910), Tennessee Civil War Veterans Questionnaires, Vol. 3, compiled by Dyer & Moore, p. 926, Jerry Nelson. MOUNCE7 GORE (ISAAC (IKE)6, JOHN5, HENRY4, JOHN3, JOSEPH2, JOHN1) was born 1811 in Overton County, Tennessee, and died Bef. 07 June 1841 in Defeated Creek, Tennessee. He married REBECCA L. SIMCOE, daughter of JOHN SIMCOCK/SIMCOE and W. BRYANT. She was born 1810 in Overton County, Tennessee, and died 06 December 1867 in Overton County, Tennessee. Notes for MOUNCE GORE: A grave in Shiloh Cemetery in Overton County on Hardy's Chapel Road beside Rebecca Simcoe Gore's grave is simply marked "GORE". Some believe this grave to be Mounce Gore, her husband who died in 1844 some 23 years prior to her death. It is reported that Mounce Gore sold the land to create the town of Livingston in 1835. "Overton Co, TN, Reference Docket 1818-1843:" June 7, 1841: "To Admr. (administrator) Aplmt (?) of Mounce GORE 2.00." (Based on my knowledge of these old records, I feel this would mean that the administrator of the will/estate of Mounce GORE had turned over money collected.) Sept. Court, 1843, "Rebecca GORE Dr. (meaning debtor) to Guardian Bond, .50." "Overton County, TN, County Court Minutes, Feb 1844 - Nov 1849:" Page 70 - "Upon motion it is ordered by the Court that Rebecca GORE be released from the duties as Guardian to the minor heirs of Mounce GORE deceased and that said appointment be and is hereby considered null and void from this date." June Term 1845. The first entry MIGHT indicate that Mounce GORE died before June 1841. The second entry would indicate that Mounce GORE was deceased at least before Sept of 1843. More About MOUNCE GORE: Burial: Shiloh Cemetery, Overton County, Tennessee Individual Reference: 07 June 1841, Overton County, Tennessee Minutes Notes for REBECCA L. SIMCOE: Shown on 1850 Overton County, TN Census as follows: Rebecca Gore, age 35 born in Virginia, living with Martha, daughter, age 14, Felps, son, age 12, Isaac, son age 11, Claiborne, son age 11, Overton, son age 3 and William, son age 1. All of these children were born in Tennessee. Shown on 1860 Overton County, TN Census as follows: Rebecca Gore, age 44 born in Virginia, living with Overton, son age 13, Wilson, son age 1 and Martelia, daughter, age 1. These three children are shown as born in Tennessee. After the death of Mounce Gore, Rebecca bought and sold several pieces of property. According to Tennessee law, a married person cannot sell jointly owned property without the permission and signature of the spouse and on each such sale, Rebecca indicated her marital status as single or widowed. Thus it is not believed that she ever remarried. Rebecca is buried in the Shiloh Cemetery in Overton County on Hardy's Chapel Road. More About REBECCA L. From: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Overton?read=936 Subject: Charles Claiborn Gore He gave Albert Sr. his first teaching job around 1920 at a little school at Highland or Booze. I'm not sure which name it went by at the time. Albert stayed with my great-grandfather James Porter Ledbetter. He is supposed to have "been sweet" on one of my great-aunts and proposed to her. She turned him down and the rest is history. I understand the Senator wrote about his stay in the hills of Overton County and mentions his little mountain girl. The old Charlie Gore house is still standing on Spring Street in Livingston. I hope this might help you. Gary D.
